Ortovox’s Ascent 30 Avabag Backpack is fully featured and fully equipped for backcountry skiers who prefer rappelling into powdery couloirs than riding a chairlift to the summit. Its Avabag airbag (sold separately) is Ortovox’s smallest, lightest airbag yet, and it’s completely removable for low-avy days or if you want to move the airbag into a larger Ascent Backpack for bigger tours. The Avabag uses compressed air canisters so you can take it on most airlines, and the pre-tension tool lets you practice without emptying the canister.

The backpack itself boasts most of the features that backcountry skiers look for. It has external carry systems for skis, snowboards, snowshoes, ice axes, hiking poles, helmets, and ropes to leave room inside for all the standard touring necessities. There’s a sleeve inside for hydration reservoirs, as well as a separate compartment for your beacon, probe, and shovel. Ortovox made the pack out of a durable ripstop fabric with a PU coating to shed any snow off the pack, and the back panel, shoulder straps, and waist belt include 3D molded foam for comfort.
